Britain drops to 25th for quality of life

A recent report has indicated that Britain has now fallen to 25th in the global rankings in terms of quality of life, falling even further down the list than last year when it came in at number 20 in the rankings. Amongst the countries that have now overtaken Britain in the rankings for quality of life are Lithuania, Uruguay, and the Czech Republic. France took the number one spot in the polls for the fifth year in a row.

A number of factors are considered to determine the quality of life in the countries included in the tables, and this includes the level of crime, the cost of living, climate, and population, amongst other things. International Living Magazine has been publishing the Quality of Life Index now for thirty years, and according to its report those living in France are able to enjoy an excellent quality of life where they can enjoy their lives to the full whereas in Britain people are overworked.

The top five places on the index were taken by France, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, and New Zealand. Factors such as culture, leisure, and environment are also taken into account when determining the ranking of the one hundred and ninety four countries that are on the list. Many may be shocked to see that former communist countries are taking higher rankings than Britain despite their high levels of unemployment, and are still considered to be better places to settle down than Britain.

Jackie Flynn from International Living spoke about the top ranking country, France, stating: ‘In France, life is savoured. don’t think anyone will argue that France is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The French love tidy gardens, pretty sidewalk cafes, and clean streets. Cities are well tended and with little crime.’
