Should you stay in debt to help your scores?

January 24th, 2012

I have a high-interest car loan (more than 10%) and just landed a part-time job to add to my full-time cash flow. I want to pay the car off as quickly as possible, but I have read and been told that paying a loan off early doesn’t help scores as much as paying the duration of the loan. Is there truth to this? It seems foolish, though, since won’t I be paying more interest?

Answer: The primary concern with paying off a loan is that the lender may stop reporting the account to the credit bureaus. Although there are limits to how long most negative information can stay on a credit report, there are no limits to how long good information can or must be reported.

Still, most lenders continue to report accounts that have been paid off for several years. If

Buttonwood: Not so smart

January 20th, 2012

IT IS easy to accept that small investors might be irrational—piling into dotcom stocks in late 1999, for example, or buying half-built Miami condominiums in 2006. But corporate executives are supposed to be “in the know”. That, after all, is why there are such stringent laws against insider dealing.

Take share buy-backs. Investors often see a decision by a company to buy back its own shares as a positive indicator. If the executives think the shares are a bargain, everyone else should.

How Alabama Consumers Can Repair Their Credit When False Information Is On Credit Reports

January 10th, 2012

Alabama consumers are sometimes amazed at the number of errors on credit reports, and there is conflicting advice on how to fix credit reports which have errors.

Some advise disputing every negative item.

We don’t.

We do advise disputing with the credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, Innovis, and Trans Union, any information that is false.

On our sister website, Alabama Consumer Protection, we have a detailed description and video on how to recognize credit report errors and how to dispute them.

If you still have errors after properly disputing them, then we have some suggestions on how to ultimately correct those errors — normally by suing the (ir)responsible companies.

We hope you enjoy this information and find it useful.
